Summer Programs

Dublin Summer Program

The Dublin Summer Program provides undergraduates with an intense summer immersion experience. Students live in Ireland for six weeks, studying Irish history and culture with a rotating group of Notre Dame professors. Our academic offerings include a course in Irish history taught by Kevin Whelan, Director of the Dublin Global Gateway, and an Irish literature course taught by P. J. Mathews, professor of English at University College Dublin, that satisfies the Notre Dame’s literature requirement.

The program is defined by the belief that cultural immersion animates the educational experience as much as classroom study. Students partake in a full cultural program, including field trips across the entire island, museum, theater, and gallery visits, guest lectures, sporting events, and musical and theatrical performances.

The four weeks in Dublin are bookended by an opening week based in Kilkenny and the sunny south-east, and a final week based at the Kylemore Abbey Global Center in Connemara, western Ireland. The program offers access to the best of Ireland — the vibrant contemporary metropolis of Dublin, the ancient castles and cathedrals of the south-east, and the waters and the wild of the Atlantic coast.

Engineering Summer Program

The Engineering Summer Program allows undergraduate engineering students the opportunity to experience Ireland to its fullest while taking both a university requirement in Kevin Whelan’s Introduction to Ireland course and a technical elective taught by either Professor Diogo Bolster of the College of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences or Professor Michael Kitz, the director of the Integrated Engineering and Business Practices Program at Notre Dame.

The program is defined by the belief that cultural immersion animates the educational experience as much as classroom study. Students partake in a full cultural program, including field trips across the entire island, museum, theater, and gallery visits, guest lectures, sporting events, and musical and theatrical performances.

The program opens with a week based out of the Kylemore Abbey Global Center exploring Connemara and the western counties of Ireland. Students spend the following four weeks in Dublin, taking their courses at the Dublin Global Gateway with afternoon excursions in and around the greater county. The program ends with a week in Kilkenny, exploring the sunny south-east of Leinster.

Pre-College Study Abroad: Ireland

The programs offered by the Office of Pre-College Programs at Notre Dame offer high school students a chance to engage in immersive summer study. Since 2017, the Dublin Global Gateway has hosted a two-week program highlighting Irish culture, history, and literature. Participants spend a week based in Trinity College Dublin exploring the east coast: from the vibrant capital city of Dublin, to Belfast in the North, the Wicklow Mountains and the coast of Wexford. The second week focuses on the west of Ireland: the beauty of the wild Connemara landscapes, and the living culture of rural Connaught. High schoolers can earn a college credit and experience the Notre Dame classroom before the college admissions process begins.
